CHAPTER FIFTEEN

It only took fifteen minutes for the truck to leave the green hill country behind, and soon they were zooming down the highway on the way to the city. Jemima watched the traffic with terrified eyes. She had only been in a car a few times before, and then only when she’d been sick. The trip had always been to the clinic in town, which was only a few miles away from her house.

But now the truck was hurtling down a highway as broad and wide as the road to destruction at lightning speed, barely avoiding other cars and larger trucks that suddenly appeared in front of them. Jemima clutched the armrest with white fingers, and finally had to close her eyes.

The Williams fellow had been quiet, but he started to hum to himself. Jemima frowned. She was trying to pray.

Then he started talking. “Now, when we get there, Duchess, I’ll take you back to the waiting area. I’ve requested a room for us, so we can watch the auction privately. They’ve printed up a brochure for the buyers, all about the letter and its history. That might be fun to look at, while you’re waiting. The guy from the appraiser’s told me last week that he thinks the bidding is going to be fierce. You can’t count on that, but the lady from Brinkley’s – Miss Juniper, you’ll meet her today – said that interest has been off the charts.”

Jemima turned to look at him. “My name is Jemima. Not Duchess!”

He grinned at her, and she frowned again. “You don’t care what I think, do you, Brad Williams?” she asked crossly. “You just want a story, to make yourself famous!”

He nodded placidly. “Of course I want a story. It’s my job to want a story,” he agreed. “Is that unfair?”

Jemima was nonplussed. She had never heard anyone admit a self-interested motive so readily. But then, he was an Englischer, and couldn’t be expected to do anything else.

“Have you eaten breakfast?” he asked pleasantly.

She turned and looked at him. “Yes.”

“Good. It’ll take us an hour to get there, so you might be hungry again. I’ve arranged for a light brunch before the auction, in case you are.”

He was watching the road, and so she let her eyes linger on him. He had combed his hair back neatly, but it was still a big wavy bush, with twigs sticking out at odd angles against the stark light. His eyebrows were like...really, like the fuzzy blonde worms she had played with as a child, always moving, and curling up and down. He had a strong profile: a straight nose, a square jaw, and a stubborn chin.

“Why didn’t you keep the letter?” she blurted.

The question seemed to take him by surprise. The fuzzy eyebrows shot up.

“Why? Well, I–” He was silent for a long minute, looked at her keenly, and then smiled and shrugged. “You know, I think you’ve got me there, Duchess. I don’t really know why not. I have a few guesses.
